Valentines Day Outfit Ideas

I used to not care about dressing up for certain holidays or themes. However, I’ve come to realize that variety is the spice of life and also, why not just have mini celebrations from time to time? This especially comes true to Valentine’s Day – enter people talking about how its just a product of capitalism.

When we think of celebrating and dressing differently, we also need to consider our consumption of items for only special occasions. I think there’s room to think about what we are consciously buying and whether it’s worth the buy for the amount of wear you are getting. That’s where I have found items that are bold and are in true Valentine’s Day theme, but are also things you can wear throughout the year. These picks are all simple enough to dress up or dress down and mix and match with other basics in your wardrobe, while still remaining a bold centerpiece.

1. Be basic

Reformation Dana Cashmere Crew Sweater - $168

A cashmere sweater is considered a staple. This one from Reformation is made from cotton, recycled cashmere, and wool. It’s an investment, but it’s cost per use is guaranteed to be low. I think the monochromatic look worn by the model looks particularly on point for Valentine’s Day.

2. Start with a base layer

Starting with a great base layer like a T-shirt or body suit is a subtle way of popping some red into your outfit. I’d pair this body suit from Abercrombie with some wide legged trousers and cardigan for an office look. For evening, I’d dress it up with a leather jacket and black jeans. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s a piece that’s going to last and flatters your personal body shape.

3. Classic patterns

Everlane The SuperFuzz Alpaca Crew - $218

The colors in this striped sweater from Everlane makes think of the Valentine’s Day boxes that we would make in Elementary school. I think taking these colors that work together very boldly, but putting them in a classic pattern, makes it a easy wear. I think this is a great seasonal pick over all. I’d personally throw a turtleneck underneath and black leggings on the bottom and add gold jewelry to complete the look

4. Solid bottom

The Abercrombie Sloane pants are my favorite bottoms to build an outfit out of. I opt for the Curve Love and tall sizing and it gives a flattering fit. I think a maroon trouser is a great staple to have as it goes with a lot of other colors. I think for Valentine’s Day specifically, pairing with a pink sweater and adding a belt would put you on theme.

5. Versitality

Lucy and Yak Jada Shirt Dress: Organic Corduroy – $86

If you’re a fan of corduroy, you’ll love this piece from Lucy and Yak. A great way to introduce variation in your wardrobe is not just to use fun colors, but also different textures. For this reason I think its a great piece to wear even beyond Valentine’s Day, especially during fall. However, for the holiday, I think it looks great as a dress paired with pink leggings, as worn by the model.

6. Fun shoes

Lisa Says Gah Mackie Heel - $198

Red shoes whether they be flats, heels, Mary Janes, etc. are a great piece to keep in your wardrobe. I typically advocate for items that you can mix and match, but sometimes people can get caught up with their wardrobe having a lot of neutral tones. I think red shoes are just the pop of interest needed. If you’ve been thinking about getting a pair, I’d recommend you take the plunge for your Valentine’s Day outfit!

7. The Little Red Dress

Wearing a red dress can be a bold statement, so it’s important to choose a length and shape that’s comfortable for you and you can easily mix and match with other pieces. For instance, this dress featured from Reformation serves as a great example. It’s versatile enough to pair with tights, cardigans, sweaters, or blazers, allowing you to adapt your look to any occasion.
