Best Fabric for Skirts | Sew Your Own skirt

I have been noticing that clothes sold in stores are getting worse and worse in terms of cheap synthetic fabrics utilized and the lack of luster craftsmanship. Many pieces nowadays lose their shape or are sold with loose threads. This has inspired me to make my clothes with natural fibers. My sense of style leads me to simple silhouettes, so I gave it a try.

I love this new hobby and my favorite piece I’ve made so far is a tiered maxi skirt made of cotton fabric. I learned a lot about skirt fabric during this project and want to share how you can achieve something similar.

Natural Fibers

Let’s first dive in to what natural fabrics are and why they are the best fabric for basically everything. Natural fabrics can be defined by where they come from: plants and animals. Synthetic fabrics are produced through petroleum-based chemical manufacturing. There is definitely a place for this type of fabric. Synthetic fibers can offer cheaper production, strength, durability, moisture wicking, and wrinkle resistance. However, on a day-to-day basis I don’t need these characteristics.

I am making an effort to choose more sustainable fabrics. Natural fabrics come from renewable resources and prevent microplastics from entering our water systems. Lightweight cotton or linen fabrics are also breathable and, much like their synthetic counterparts, moisture-wicking. As with any item you own, you need to take special care of these fabrics. I typically wash most of my cotton, linen, and silk in the washing machine and air dry. As for wool, cashmere, and more tailored items I opt for dry cleaning.

Below is a list of the most common natural fabrics. Keep in mind that depending on the construction of the fabric, they can offer unique characteristics that are more suitable for different types of clothing. If you’re sewing your clothes, you also will have to keep in mind your skill level. I put myself as a beginner and I stick to cotton and linen for the most part.

A-Line Skirt

What makes an A-line skirt? Well, it’s shaped much like the letter “A”. Cinched at the waist with a gradual flare makes this a simple skirt, yet a popular choice. This is a classic silhouette that will last the test of time. The best skirts in this shape are constructed of fabric that drapes. There are many fabric choices for this style, here are the most appropriate:

Pencil Skirt

Pencil skirts fit snuggly through the waist and hips and come down right at the knee or mid-calf. There are plenty of different fabrics to choose from to match your personal style and occasion. As far as selecting a natural fiber, stick to silks and kinds of cotton. Cotton knits especially come in a variety of weights and weaves to meet the structure and flexibility (stretch) that you desire.

Maxi Skirt

I think maxi skirts are the most versatile piece you can add to your wardrobe. There are endless fabrics and silhouettes to choose from. Choose fabric types that have greater weight to them if you’re looking for a type of skirt that drapes to the floor. The right fabric for this project could be silk or knit fabrics, such as jersey. If your personal style is more edgy, try using lace (my next project!).

I have made a tiered maxi skirt with cotton eyelet fabric and it came out perfect! It has been a great addition to my summer skirts. There is a variety of cotton fabric to choose from for this type of skirt. However, if it’s your first project, eyelet fabric does a great job of hiding any imperfections.

Mini Skirt

Mini skirts are perfect for pulling together a look in warm weather, or layering come the fall season. Regardless of how basic it may appear on its own, mini skirts remain a statement piece. The first fabric I think of for this style is denim. There are a variety of colors, washes, and distressing to choose from. This paired with different notions is sure to make a unique fashion statement that meets your personal preference.

For a fit right above the knees, I think a lightweight cotton, linen, or cotton/linen blend is the best choice for summer skirts. When sewn with good fabric and executed with good craftsmanship (think of a neat seam line), these can be dressed up to elevate a look. Just as easily, however, pair with a graphic tee for a casual and comfy outfit.

If you’re just getting into the world of sewing a me-made wardrobe, or just looking to shop for a new piece, consider the fabric options in front of you. Natural fibers such as cotton and linen are a great choice of fabric to get started. Additionally, sewing a skirt for one of your first projects as a beginner is a great idea due to the simple lines and steps involved. Whatever you choose, select the best option for you!
